The Dockers forward line, perhaps the largest sleeping
giant in the AFL, finally came to life on Saturday with a
consistent, four quarter, 20 goal effort against the
reigning premiers three years running. Medhurst was the
headline act, awakening from a truly awful month of footy
where he must be running last in the "honest effort"
category if indeed there was such a thing. However, no
criticisms of his game on Sunday, where for the first time
in ages he appeared hungry for the ball, was prepared to run
and get it, and reduced the infuriating cheat tactics he is
becoming well known for. The end result? Nine goals in a
personal best for him and a personal best for any Docker on
their home turf. In the coming weeks, one would hope for a
similarly hungry and confident effort, regardless of the
amount of goals he kicks. In yet another comeback game for
the Moose, Clive Waterhouse, the crowd roared whenever he
got the ball, and kicked 2 quality goals and set up at least
two others. Let's hope he can stay there this time. Other
people to impress was the ever reliable duo of Haselby and
Bell, amassing over 50 possessions between them. Justin
Longmuir also, carrying the ruck duties, had the best game
he has had for a long while with many telling touches and
good use of the ball. Farmer also had a good game with three
majors. Kicking 20 plus goals was something Fremantle fans
got used to in 2003, but this is the first time it happened
in 2004. Five goals a quarter was a good sign and one to
cherish heading into the coalface environment of an Essendon
supporting Telstra Dome. However, Brisbane were decimated
with suspension and injury, and it was at sunny Subiaco
Oval, and with so many players playing well with the "soft"
tag firmly planted on their backs, it will be interesting to
see, how these players back up on Friday night. Bring on
the Bummers...
