Heath Black

Heath Black is known to many as "Boomerang" Black. He started his career reluctantly with the Dockers as a teenage Victorian drafted in 1997 by inaugural coach Gerard Neesham, who was impressed with his speed and accurate left foot. He steadily got better as his career progressed, getting more game time and kudos as the seasons past by. Then, in his contract year, the Dockers had an even worse season than usual, finishing last. Whether this was a factor in his decision to leave I am not sure. Ben Allan, self appointed head masochist at the time, said that Freo had 7 players that any team would want, and Heath Black was one of them.

Black came second in the Best and Fairest that year behind Peter Bell but by then he had already decided to leave Perth and head back home to join the Saints. Stunningly though, at the end of the 2004 season, Heath demanded a trade back to Fremantle. Apparently it was a family 'decision' but the reality is there has never been a more pussywhipped bloke in the history of the AFL! Black's family are all in Victoria, it was his young wife who wished to come home. Nonetheless, the Dockers were happy to take him as he is an excellent player. Had a great 2005 season in his comeback season, capped off by representing Australia in the International Rules Series.
